a good lesson for me

Every so often, I spend an evening wandering through the blogosphere. I usually start on one of the blogs I regularly (or not-so-regularly) read and when I'm done there, I click on one of the links in their blog roll and start my sojourn. I learn all sorts of interesting things when I do this.

Yesterday, I found out about a toaster that will toast an image of Darth Vader into your bread, available in January.

Today, I found the blog Pregnant Drug-Dealing Prostitutes, after cruising over there from Stuff White People Do. The blog's name obviously caught my eye. Here is what the two authors have to say about the content of their blog:

We talk about many topics on here; namely race, discrimination, racism, culture, poverty, education, feminism (whatever that is these days), fatness, fashion, entertainment and sexuality and are happy you’ve come to join us in discussion. (more...)

These are all topics that interest me (well, except maybe fashion and entertainment), not so much because I have any special knowledge of them, but rather because I know I need to know more. Over the years, I have taken way too many things for granted as a well-educated, white woman. I am trying to be more mindful of that fact, which in part is why I am drawn to women's studies courses. Such courses typically explore all forms of oppression, not just sexism.

Anyway, PDDP's most recent article is "Pretty Fat, Pretty Small, Pretty All". For any of you who, like me, have ever hated something (or everything) about your body, read that post. The author may be young enough to be my student, but today she was my teacher.
